George Hirsch Outdoor Living Tips 101 series

Staging for easy Outdoor Living.
Summer is upon us and at the beach is where family and friends want to be.
If your home is the weekend destination, there is some Pool-side to-do-preparation that needs to be checked off before house quests arrive.
  • Give your pool-side towels a fresh laundering after winter storage and store in galvanized bucket or willow hamper at the ready, by lounge chairs.
  • Stock up on new UVF 50 sunscreen; chances are your sunscreen is expired.
  • Stock up on bottled water or fill a pool-side pitcher (that's plastic) with filtered water.
  • Provide plenty of shade! A few lovely 9 foot market umbrellas should do the trick.
  • Make sure your pool water PH and chlorine level is in check.
  • Have child-size safety vests, even if you do not have children; someone always sneaks one in.
  • Most important: be a mindful water monitor at all times while kids and pets are around the pool!

Today George Hirsch Tip: all about living well

Dream of having an outdoor herb garden. Here is the George plan on how-to get started.

PLANNING YOUR OUTDOOR HERB GARDEN

Nothing compares to the flavor of fresh herbs in cooking.  And now is the time to plan your fresh herb garden, so that you'll have an abundance of flavorful herbs at your fingertips.  But before you start digging, there's a little bit of planning to take into consideration.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when setting out to plant your own outdoor fresh herb garden:

First consider the amount of time you have to spend and tend to your garden.  If you're a weekend gardener, then a little patch of kitchen herbs is a great start, you can always increase the size of your garden next year.  But if you're an avid gardener, go crazy!  Add some more exotic herbs and fragrant ones.

Find a good location for your garden.  Most herbs need five or six hours of sunlight.  They like it slightly on the dryer side. But make sure you stay close enough to your back door for when you're running from the kitchen to the garden.

Lay out your garden on paper. Think about style.  Do you like a formal orderly appearance to your garden, or a more natural style? Keep in mind when planning to include walking paths so you can reach to weed and harvest your herbs and keep your feet dry when the ground is wet.

What to plant?  If you intend to cook with the herbs make a list of the ones you use most common.  If you like fragrant herbs or colorful herbs, ask your local garden shop what grows well in your area.

Remember, herbs like a fairly neutral or slightly alkaline soil.  So if you know your soil is acid you can add some lime when preparing your soil.

When you're planting, try to keep the annuals and perennials separate so when the end of the season comes you won't disturb the roots of the perennials when you plant or pull out annuals.

Try to keep taller plants to the back of the border or in the center of your bed and smaller ones near the edges to form borders.

Remember, If I can do it, you can do it! -George

George Hirsch Tip: all about living well

It's time to stock your outdoor pots with colorful flowers and herbs. How do you keep your unglazed clay pots from drying out so fast and pulling all the vital moisture from the plants soil.

George Hirsch Home Solution for Living Well

After you have washed your clay pots with proper potting wash solution (of one cap of bleach to one gallon water), next let the pots fully dry in the sun.

Coat the interior of the unglazed terra-cotta pot with Using Acrylic Polymer (Water-based) Glaze; available at home improvement centers in paint department or craft stores in art supplies section or concrete waterproofing sealer.

George Hirsch simple how-to home solution will make for a better outdoor living experience this season!

Let pots fully dry: the glaze dries very fast but I suggest at least 24 hours for adding fresh soil and plants.

Remember,

If I can do it, you can do it

A Kitchen and Bath Remodel, Six Times the Charm

There are numerous considerations when deciding it’s time to remodel the kitchen and bath. The pleasure of a remodel is returned back to you time and time again, given the amount of time we spend in these rooms.

Proper planning will avoid the traps that could make it stressful.
Outline your project into two categories, the wish list and then the hard budget. Have a good attitude, like making the the plan will be exciting and fun. Gather as much information as possible before setting up your budget. You can add and delete once you have researched all possibilities. Talk to other people who have recently remodeled.

In your research where do you go first? The Home Depot, Expo, Loews…Yes, why not. It will be a good idea to go see new products and talk to designers up close and personal. There are many factors that will determine what you want and will need. Oh, and try not to be led by designers and their motivation to sell. Consider what you would want and what will work best for you, your home and lifestyle. Getting these points clear up front will be very important.

An excellent resource for consumers is the National Kitchen & Bath Association with over 40,000 trade members. According to NKBS, “it’s the largest non-profit organization in the US and Canada offering resources to consumers with it’s mission to promote professionalism and ethical business practices and provide leadership and direction for the kitchen and bath industry”. On the NKBA web site there are very good resources to guide you through the various steps of a remodel.

Among the resources NKBA offer include, a do it yourself workbook, how to hire certified professionals and planning guidelines to name a few. With so much new information on green/ sustainable designs you’ll need to brush up on what is practicable and current in today’s trends.

I’ve had the opportunity to be a guest speaker at the NKBA’s Kitchen/Bath Industry Show & Conferenceaka KBIS, the world's largest trade show dedicated to the kitchen and bath industry. This show is amazing, you’ll find the latest and greatest of kitchen and bath products. Open only to trade and media. It is a good resource to ask your designer, do they attend? And are they certified? If they are certified you will know they are up to date with the latest in design and product features.

After you do your homework and are ready to make the plunge follow these tips:
Georgekitchen_2
Get plenty of samples and live with them for a while
Make decisions when you are well rested
Keep complete records of the entire project
Take before, during and after pictures
Ask questions, then ask more questions
Get referrals from people who have used the product or service
Have a back up plan; (in case there is a delay in the toilet you ordered)

I have encountered remodel 'bumps' in a project and it usually comes down to miscommunication. Don’t get upset, bumps will happen. However, I find that if you keep a good spirit and friendly manner you are more likely to be served in the same way. You know the 'catch more bees with honey' scenario. A simple door I changed in my kitchen required five changes before it was done right. The sixth time was the charm and now I am very happy with how it turned out.

A good movie to see before a renovation project, The Money Pit.

What is on your wish list?
I hear avocado is making a come back!

Enjoy,
George
